My idea of a successful client training experience goes like this. We meet up for an initial consultation. We discuss your current condition, your ideal condition, set some short-term and long-term goals, etc. After this initial meeting, we embark on a 4-8 week training odyssey, during which we train together 3 days per week and I help you construct a challenging physical fitness routine that will literally blow your current workouts out of the water. Once we get to the end of our initial program, you’ll no longer need to see me 3 days a week. In fact, you may never need to see me again.
Sounds like a terrible business plan, right? Fortunately for you (and unfortunately for my bottom line) my training philosophy follows the old adage, “Give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day … teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.”
I want to arm you with strategies that will help you make better food choices, reduce stress in your life, and get more out of your workouts. I have a “more bang for your buck” strategy when it comes to training. My education and experience have taught me to think outside the box and train more efficiently so I can get out of the gym and spend more time enjoying the body I work so hard to maintain.
Don’t get me wrong, it certainly takes consistency and dedication. You will have to put in the work. But I’m here to say, with the right strategies, you can get more out of half an hour in your living room than most people get out of an hour in the gym. If you’re really ready to transform your life, I can give you the strategies you need.
At this point, I am still a full-time video producer at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. As time permits, I am working privately with clients in the Little Rock area. I currently do not work out of a gym, and I prefer to train clients at their homes, or in places like public parks. There are several reasons for this.
Once we begin working together, most arrangements include complex and innovative program design tailored specifically to your goals, general lifestyle advice to help improve your diet and reduce stress, initial fitness assessment and ongoing progress checks, and the personal attention you’d expect from a top-notch fitness trainer.
Initial Consultation – At the moment, I am doing initial consultations free of charge. These are typically done in a neutral setting on a weekend. We can meet for lunch, for a cup of coffee, whatever. This meeting can take up to an hour but is usually shorter than that. We’ll get to know each other a bit, talk about your current condition and exercise routine. We’ll talk about your goals and your availability. If we’re in agreement that we want to work together, we’ll look over some training plan options and I’ll give you some forms to fill out before the basic assessment and our first session.
Personal Training – Every client will require a slightly different arrangement based on his or her goals and availability. However, I have put together a couple of typical packages so you get an idea of what to expect.
Now, if all of this sounds like a lot, remember that you don’t have to maintain a gym membership in addition to these costs. Once you’ve put in the initial investment, you’ll have everything you need to get the greatest workouts of your life right in your own home on whatever schedule suits you best.
Let’s run a few more numbers: 1 year gym membership - $360 per year (if it’s cheap) + 1 month personal training sessions - $540 = $950. You’ve already almost reached my full 2-month plan, and you’re most likely following a standard plan that has been rehashed for who knows how many clients and has you spending an hour in the gym plus 20-30 getting there from home or work 3 days a week. Sure, you’ve got the gym membership for a year, but there’s no guarantee you’ll use it much after the training sessions are over, and as I said earlier, you really don’t need the equipment they have anyway.
