Tantric Spooning

Whether it’s after making love, before going to sleep, or first thing in the morning, everybody loves to spoon … well, at least all you ladies out there – you love to spoon, right? And who doesn’t like the idea of using a few tantric sex techniques to improve quality and longevity between the sheets.

Below are a couple variations on spooning inspired by tantric traditions that involve getting in tune with your breath, then tuning your own breath in with your lover’s. These exercises are great for all sorts of things from calming down and reconnecting after a fight to amping up the anticipation factor before some rowdy tantric love-making.

The Basics

Assume the classic spooning position on a cushy surface and just breathe normally. Take a moment to feel the contact your skin makes with your lover’s. Feel your breath moving through your body in a natural rhythm.

Once you have found the rhythm of your own breath, try to match it to your lover’s, such that your exhales and inhales are timed to one another’s. Do not try to force your partner’s breath to match yours. Rather, gently bring your breath into rhythm with your lover’s, as he or she does the same. Trust each other to find the sweet spot.

Once your breathing is in sync, take five deep breaths this way. Feel every inch of contact your body makes with your lover’s and feel how your shared breathing affects the contact you have.

As you reach the fifth breath in this patter, the person behind – the one whose arms are around the other – should now hold his or her breath while the other inhales. As the person in front exhales, the person behind now starts to inhale. Your breathing rhythm is still in sync, but the inhale-exhale cycle is now staggered. Feel how the void left by your lover’s exhale is filled by your inhale, and vise versa. Imagine the two of you are like two sugar cubes in a cosmic tea cup as the physical boundaries between you dissolve and your energies dance seamlessly in the ether. Continue this pattern for ten breaths.

Now return to the original pattern where you’re inhaling and exhaling together. Sense for a moment the increased togetherness you feel as a result of this exercise. Be thankful for it. If you like, you can continue into the more advanced chakra-tuning variation below. If not, carry your love into whatever activity your combined energies bring you.

Breathing Through the Chakras

Now that your energies are synced via your breath, you can use the breath to awaken kundalini and guide this energy up sushumna nadi to be expressed in whatever lusty fashion you most prefer. I’ve kindly broken down kundalini and the chakra energy system in another article for those of you who are unfamiliar with the concepts, but if you’re already comfortable with that bit of ancient wisdom, feel free to read on.

Continue to breathe in time with each other for another moment.  Sense the closeness you share.  Feel the energy exchanged where your skin happens to make contact with your lover’s.  Now the person who is receiving, who is being held in the spooning position initiates the chakra meditation by gently squeezing the other person’s arm or hand, by quietly saying the number, name, or some other indicator of the chakra to begin concentrating on.

Some suggest starting at the heart center, moving upward, then back down to the base of sushumna nadi, but I feel that since kundalini lies in wait at the base of the spine, this is where a couple should start. In general, it’s probably okay to start wherever you like.

Breathe into the root center.  Feel the contact you have with your lover at the base of your spine, or the contact the base of your lover’s spine has with you.  Is there a gentle vibration?  A strong vibration?  Feel the prana spiraling around and up your spine from muladhara, the root center.  Allow it to expand and spiral through your lover, joining with his or her life force.  Feel the soothing pulse of your combined energies spiraling around the root center for several more breaths.

When it is time, the receiver should signal gently to move up the spine to the sexual center.  Feel the contact you have with your lover just below your navel, or the contact the your lover’s lower abdomen has with the small of your back.  Is there a gentle vibration?  A strong vibration?  Feel the prana spiraling around and up your spine from swadisthana, the sexual center.  Does this sensation differ from what you felt moments ago?  Allow the gentle hum of prana to expand and spiral through your lover, joining with his or her life force.  Feel the soothing pulse of your combined energies spiraling around the sexual center for several more breaths.

When it is time, the receiver now indicates gently that your shared concentration should move up the spine to the power center.  Feel the contact your solar plexus has with your lover’s mid-back, or vise versa.  Is there a gentle vibration?  A strong vibration?  Feel the prana spiraling around and up your spine from manipura, the power center.  Does this sensation differ from what you felt moments ago?  Allow the universal pulse of prana to expand and spiral through your lover, joining with his or her life force.  Feel the soothing throb of your combined energies spiraling around the power center for several more breaths.

Soon the receiver will indicate it is time to move up the spine to the heart center, the fourth chakra.  Feel the contact you and your lover share at your heart.  Is there a gentle vibration?  A strong vibration?  Feel the energy of love spiraling around and up your spine from anahata, the heart center.  Does this sensation differ from what you felt moments ago?  Allow the soothing vibrations of prana to expand and spiral through your lover, joining with his or her life force.  Feel the combined energies spiraling around the heart center for several more breaths.

Now the receiver will gently signal it is time to move up the spine to the speech center, the fifth chakra.  Feel the proximity between the nape of your neck and your lover’s spine, or vise versa.  Is there a gentle vibration?  A strong vibration?  Breathe more loudly if necessary to express and share the energy spiraling around and up your spine from vishudda, the speech center.  Does this sensation differ from what you felt moments ago?  Allow the rhythmic vibrations of mutual self-expression to expand and spiral around each other.  Feel the combined energies dancing around the speech center for several more breaths.

When the time is right, the receiver will nudge your shared concentration up the spine to the third-eye center, the sixth chakra.  Feel the awakened kundalini between your eyes gyrating with your lover’s.  Is there a gentle vibration?  A strong vibration?  Does this sensation differ from what you felt moments ago?  Allow the dance of intuition to expand and spiral around the other.  Feel the combined energies twirling around the third-eye center for several more breaths.

Now the receiver will at last suggest movement of breath to the center of IT ALL, the crown chakra, sahasrara.  Feel the spirit of God surrounding your souls and begging them to be one.  Allow the pure expression of existence to be in both of you together.  Feel the Universal Creativity and know that every time you make love, you are reenacting the creation of the universe.
